Newbury is a vibrant market town that enjoys a unique mix of heritage and technology, creating a diverse environment in which to shop, work or spend time. It lies in beautiful countryside, much of which has been designated as an Area of Outstanding Natural beauty and sits astride the River Kennet and Avon canal, which winds its way through the heart of the town centre on its way to the River Thames.
The pedestrianised town centre has an excellent and varied selection of department stores, national multiples and independent shops. The Kennet Shopping Centre has recently undergone a major refit and boasts a number of well-known names and smaller independent retailers. There is an open air market in the market place every Thursday and Saturday that dates back to 1204.
Throughout Newbury there is an abundance of eating places catering for all tastes including traditional pubs, popular cafes and fashionable restaurants.
Furthermore, West Berkshire Council, advised by Strutt & Parker, has selected Standard Life Investments in partnership with Shearer Property Group as their preferred Development Partner for a major £120 million mixed use redevelopment on Park Way in Newbury town centre.
Following a competitive selection process Standard Life Investments and Shearer Property Group will work with the Council in developing a mixed use scheme on the Park Way development site. The 5.7 acre site has been allocated for development to include 270,000 sq ft of new retail space comprising a major department store, large fashion stores and a mix of medium and smaller retail units and catering outlets. There will also be a major residential component and car parking for up to 600 cars.
A planning application will be prepared with a view to submission by the end of summer 2005. The development is planned for completion by Christmas 2009.
